Whitehaven School Post 16 Centre has a great deal to offer if you wish to continue your studies beyond GCSE and we are very proud of the achievements of our students. Our aim is to encourage every student, regardless of ability, aptitude and background, chosen course or career, towards the goal of personal excellence. We continually look to improve our offer, in and outside of the classroom, to make sure our students can really profit from and enjoy their time with us.
Students in the Post 16 Centre at Whitehaven School enjoy good facilities, specialist teaching and an excellent pastoral and academic support network. This includes expertise in advising on higher education choices and applications, resulting in the vast majority of our students gaining their first choice of university place. The Post 16 Council allows our students to take an active part in the running of the Centre. We also believe it is important that they see themselves as part of the main school community and their involvement in it is strongly encouraged, especially through community service and participation in the School Council. The additional freedom which comes with entry to Post 16 also carries responsibilities and we expect standards of work and behaviour which ensure that our students provide valuable role models to the rest of the school. On entering Post 16, there is a requirement to enter a learning agreement which sets out clearly entitlements and responsibilities.
The academic curriculum is complemented by many possibilities for extra-curricular and enrichment activities. Extra-curricular opportunities include some which carry accreditation, such as Young Enterprise, Duke of Edinburgh and the Community Sports Leaders’ Awards. Others are just lots of fun, like quiz nights and inter-sixth form games and yet others are a lot of fun and hard work as well, among them participation in the Copeland/Rungwe (Tanzania) link. Sporting activities include involvement in competitive leagues as well as beating the staff at football and badminton.
Through your subjects you will be offered the chance to take part in enrichment activities, including work experience, conferences, field trips and visits to galleries, theatres and universities.
