CURRICULUM

Whitehaven School offers a curriculum that is designed to meet the needs of its students and the national curriculum.

All of our students should have equal opportunity to experience a curriculum that is broad in its range of subjects, balanced, relevant and differentiated to meet students' needs. In key stage 3 students follow a common programme that builds a firm foundation for their future progression. Students study the core subjects of english, mathematics and science as well as the humanities, the arts, technology and physical education.

Information technology skills are developed in discrete lessons and throughout all curriculum subjects. Citizenship and personal / social / health education is taught by specialist staff to all students. Students are taught in a variety of groupings, including mixed ability and setting.

During key stage 3 students receive guidance to help them to make their choices from the full range of GCSE courses we offer at key stage 4. Whitehaven School also offers a growing range of vocational subjects and students may also study courses at the Lakes College. All students have the opportunity to benefit from a work placement with local business or industry. We encourage students to retain a broad range of subjects and assist them in their future decisions, using our strong links with local employers, colleges, universities and our own Post -16 centre.

The Curriculum Pattern

The following pattern is based on a 25 period week and satisfies the requirements of the national curriculum. This seeks to establish a broad and balanced pattern of subjects to which all students have access and which allows progression and continuity between the key stages. The school reviews the curriculum regularly to accommodate changes in the national curriculum and the national literacy and numeracy strategies.
