WELL DONE GIRLS

The Years  10 and 11 girls rugby team recently
travelled to Netherhall School to play the Cumbria
Schools Qualifier for the Year 11 Champion Schools
Rugby League.

The girls competition is organised differently to the boys.
The winners go to a festival day rather than play a
knockout competition.

The Girls game is 9 a side with a few variations in the rules
such as no conversions. Nevertheless the game against
Netherhall was full contact with plenty of competitive
aggression on show.

The game started well with Lauren Lofthouse scoring
after only two minutes. At the restart Whitehaven easily
regained possession and Lauren then scored a breakaway
try from 60 yards out. By now the girls confidence was
building and the game looked to be becoming a one sided
affair. However Netherhall came back strongly, scoring an
easy try. Kendall Smith then demonstrated her athleticism
avoiding some tackles to score down the wing.
At half-time the score was 5 tries to 2.

The second half started with some good defence from
Whitehaven frustrating Netherhall and preventing a try.
Naomi Vickers then sidestepped the opposition for a well
worked score. Eventually after some very even play but
particularly good work in defence from
Lucy Pickering, Whitehaven were winners 9 tries to 6.

They now travel to Rochdale to play the finals.
The team: Kendall Smith, Lucy Pickering, Sam Blair,
Katie Boag, Ellie Scott, Lauren Lofthouse,
Naomi Vickers, Amy-Leigh Smith, Amy Cherry.

Academic Review Day

The Academic Review Day which was due to be held on 24 March has unfortunately had to be postponed until after the Easter holidays.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this has caused you.

A revised appointment sheet will be issued next week.

WHITEHAVEN SCHOOL CHARITY WALK
SATURDAY 27 MARCH

Whitehaven School and its community have for over two decades actively supported various charities that promote local, national and international causes.

In 2000 students completed a sponsored walk to raise funds for the Meningitis Research Fund and collected £2,778.  In 2005 over 300 former students, parents, teachers and governors completed 20 miles and raised a magnificent £11, 678.  The amount of £10,000 was then donated to the palliative care unit (Henderson Suite) at the West Cumberland Hospital and the balance of £1,678. to the West Cumbria Hospice at Home.

We are aiming to do the same 20 mile walk on Saturday 27 March which is the first day of the Easter holidays.  The funds raised will go to the Well Child Charity which helps support sick and poorly babies, toddlers and young people and the Teenage Cancer Care Unit at Newcastle Hospital.

Students, former students, parents, teaching and non teaching staff, as well as governors are all welcome to attend.  The walk will take place on the cycle track from Whitehaven to Rowrah and there will be refreshment stations every two miles.

Students will be informed of the walk in assemblies and will be supplied with an information letter, indemnity form and when these are returned, an official sponsor form.

The students need not do the whole walk and can walk as far as they want e.g. from the first refreshment station and back would be four miles.

Whitehaven School is committed to a holistic education for all our youngsters and feel it is important for them to know that it is better to given than to receive, especially if it is someone less fortunate than themself.

The students and community of Whitehaven School have proved for years that they are very kind, caring, compassionate and supportive.

Please contact Mr Huck on 01946 595412 or email rmhuck21@live.co.uk to send a letter into school if you want to sponsor him or do the walk yourself.

TESCO VOUCHERS

The scheme is about to kick off again and vouchers can be handed in at reception or to any teacher and they will pass them on.

Last year we exchanged our vouchers for headphones and a variety of sports equipment.  We will be sharing the equipment gained this year with Tanzania.
