Make your Mark Challenge

Take. . . ‘Desire to succeed, energy, determination, effort, resourcefulness, enthusiasm, co-operation and a BIG helping of team work'

That's what it takes  to describe the atmosphere and output from the 72 students from years 9-12 who participated in the ‘Make your Mark' challenge.

After a warm up session aimed at stimulating their creative juices the teams were set the challenge to:

"Let local inspiration lead you to a ‘cool' creation"

The challenge required each team to create a profitable business that would minimise the impact on the environment and in doing so complete four key tasks, all within strict deadlines:

Create an original and innovative idea
Consider the potential competitors, their target market and create a marketing proposal
Develop a clear financial proposal to support the product idea
To present the idea to a panel of judges

The teams worked feverishly on creating ideas, discussing and sometimes discounting them before they came up with their winning one! Developing the competitive plan required careful thought processes and creating a strategy that helped the product to stand out from the crowd was essential. The creativity ‘spilled-over' into the financial section with many ‘innovative' financial risks being taken. Finally by 14.00 all the teams were ready to present to the judges, Helen Brew, Isabel Henry, and myself.

We were impressed by the standard of the presentation and the ideas that had been generated within the short time frame, and we had a difficult task of awarding the scores. After deliberation the winning teams were K-nox (Year 9-11) and Innovate (Post 16).

K-nox students were, James Akam, Jack Rigg, Cameron Bragg, Ben Knox, Ryan Ridley, and Macaulay Hayward, while Tom Salmon, Sarah Kilburn-Wilson, Kate Orrell, Suzanne Ross, Gavin Hill and Courtney Mossop represented Innovate.

These two teams will now represent the school in the National Finals.

The students showed a real commitment throughout the day, they met all the key elements of enterprise and contributed to a rewarding and stimulating event.

Their efforts are to be applauded and we all look forward to the next Enterprise challenge event.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Whitehaven School first got involved in Operation Christmas Child fifteen years ago in 1994. Since then, every year the students and staff have generously donated shoeboxes which are destined for unfortunate and orphaned youngsters throughout the world. This year the school students have collected nearly a hundred boxes which will be sent to the orphans of Romania, who will open them on Christmas day. Particular mention should go to Miss Basso and her form who donated a total of fourteen boxes, a fantastic team effort. Throughout the years, the school has sent over two thousand shoeboxes to this very worthy cause, and this reflects the kindness and generosity of the people of Whitehaven and its community.
